On a surf and ski tour of California, our founders were sleeping in a van, several miles up a dirt road near a secret hot spring. They awoke the next morning in subzero temperatures with an engine that wouldn’t start, far outside of cell reception and the nearest town. They decided to bundle up in their sleeping bags and drink whiskey while they watched and waited for someone to come along.Cozy and warm, wrapped in their sleeping bags, they realized an opportunity to create an entirely new category of outdoor product and the idea for Rumpl was born: The world’s most versatile blankets and layers, designed to stand up to the outdoors and the elements.

An idea became a prototype and that prototype became a crowdfunding sensation. Billed as “the modern blanket inspired by active lifestyles and made from materials developed for the outdoor industry,” we knew we had something special when our backers helped us raise $216,889 on a $15,000 goal.

The Big Show
The success of our Kickstarter and media coverage from our launch caught the attention of the outdoor industry, so we took Rumpl and our “Blankets for Everywhere” sign from our San Francisco HQ to Outdoor Retailer for our first industry trade show.

Rumpl commits to donating 1% of annual sales to conservation causes through our partnership with 1% For The Planet. To date, Rumpl has donated more than $1 Million to certified causes and partners.
We partnered with California surf & climbing brand HippyTree to issue the HT Legends blanket, our first-ever product collaboration and the model for dozens of future brand and artist partnerships using our blankets as canvas.

To launch our “Many Moons” limited-edition print, we sent the blanket into the mesosphere. Outfitted with two custom weather balloons and a custom rig designed in partnership with a Portland State University graduate student, we took the concept of “space blankets” to new heights.
Rumpl introduces its artist collaboration program using The Original Puffy Blanket as the ultimate canvas for artistic expression. Dozens of artists later, the program continues to drive awareness and creative energy for Rumpl.
Team growth and a desire to be closer to mountains, forests, and rivers sent us packing to Portland, Oregon. We’ve called the Pacific Northwest home ever since and proudly keep it weird with the locals.

Rumpl rolls out a host of features and material improvements for The Original Puffy Blanket, including the hands-free Cape Clip®, our NanoLoft™ insulation technology, and 100% post-consumer recycled materialization made from plastic bottles.

Rumpl officially joins the Climate Neutral movement and begins offsetting 100% of our carbon footprint through certified carbon offsets.
Rumpl expands into Canada and international distribution with regional partnerships that eventually span the globe.
Rumpl gets a big boost of brand awareness when the brand gets featured on ABC’s hit show, Shark Tank. Interest in our blankets immediately spikes and Rumpl inventory gets bought out for months, leading to new challenges and big opportunities.
